Lukosius, Pennington, & Olorunniwo (2013) research article, “How Students’ Perceptions of Support Systems Affect Their Intentions to Drop Out or Transfer out of College” aims to explain why almost half of students that enroll into college never complete to degree status. The purpose of the study is to describe student’s perceptions on the topics of: academic, community, family, and social support system on the intentions to transfer and drop out of an academic institution. Lukosius et al. (2013) proposed two research questions to test the relationship between perceptions and intentions: “are perceptions of academic, community, family, and support systems important predictors of intentions to transfer to another college and drop out of college?” and ” which students level factors are important predictors of intentions to transfer to another college and drop out of college?” (p. 212).
The research was conducted at a College of Business with a student body consisting of 1,000 undergraduate students. Students attending twelve of the undergraduate business classes were asked to voluntarily participate during their class time. Out of the 1,000 students, the final sample included 329 completed surveys, representing about 1/3 of the overall student population. The sample consisted of 170 males and 151 females. The majority of the respondents identified themselves as juniors (30%), in comparison to freshman (27.1%), sophomores (21.5%), and seniors (20.6%). The respondents were also asked to identify their GPA on a 4.0 scale. The sample revealed (36.8%) students accumulated a GPA between 2.5 to 2.9, 3.0 to 3.4 (33.1%), 4.0 to 3.5 (11.3%), 2.0 to 2.4 (10%), and 0.0 to 1.9 (2.4%).
This exploratory study was conducted using correlational research method. More specifically, multiple linear regressions were used with dummy variables to test the hypothesis. This method attempts to model the relationship between several explanatory variables to predict the outcomes of a criterion variable, with the assumption the relationship shared will be linear (M.
