Juliet & Romeo
Love is based on physical/sexual attraction which is often intense but fleeting. Love is a more profound emotional connection that is enduring and selfless. The relationship between Romeo and Juliet is based on true love. This is made evident through; family, friends, society and the fact that they are willing to commit the ultimate sacrifice of death. They stay true and persistent to each other to the very bitter end. In spite of all the obstacles Romeo and Juliet stay committed to each other- they had many obstacles yet they were committed. The family was against them; even prince of Verona didn’t want them together as he didn’t want war by the two families, he wanted the bloodshed to be kept off the streets. They were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice of death, they rather die than be apart, and they were abandoned by the family, friends, and society- The two families had a long history of the feud.
They (Romeo and Juliet) were committed to each other in spite of all the obstacles. The family of Montague and Capulet were in an argument and they wanted to put apart Romeo and Juliet. The two families are enemies and could not approve the relationship between Juliet and Romeo. Shakespeare says that they were after revenging each other and each of the family wanted to be in power (Shakespeare 53). Because of that reason, the family members from both sides could not support the relationship between Romeo and Juliet The theme of revenge is what made Juliet’s family not to accept Romeo in their households. Another obstacle is Verona and Prince who never wanted them to be together. Example of a hindrance in the book is during the quarrel between Romeo and Verona which caused Romeo to be taken into exile. The situation was too much for Romeo and he said he would commit suicide. “Friar Lawrence calms Romeo down”. However, after that incidence, Romeo is further punished by the Prince because of his threat and groaning to Verona. It indicates injustices and hates towards Romeo but the main aim of Verona and Prince was to keep Romeo away from Juliet. Despite Romeo undergoing all these tortures, he could not stay away from Juliet. The two searched for each other to overcome these obstacles. From this illustration, it is clear that Juliet and Romeo were in deep love. They were ready to overcome all hindrances and be there for each other.
Romeo and Juliet were willing to commit the ultimate sacrifice of death to be with each other. As the novel ensues, Romeo is accused of a crime of murdering Tybalt. That’s when Juliet thought that she could fake her death so that she can be with Romeo. The plan was meant to make her family believe that she died and take this chance to spend the rest of her life with Romeo. Juliet is a religious girl aged 13 years (page 180). Because of her believes, she cannot disobey her parents, nor can she rebel or run away from home. These actions are sinful to her and would reproach her conscious. But her love for Romeo was so strong and she had to plan how to be with him. That’s when with the assistance of Friar, she pretended to have taken poison and “died”. When Romeo learned about Juliet’s death, he was in pain and could not bear living anymore. He took poison and died. He preferred to die and be with Juliet than spend the rest of his life alone. Then since Juliet had faked her death, she woke up only to see Romeo dead. She kissed Romeo’s lips but the poison in his lips could not kill her. She then opted to stab herself in the stomach and died (Hewson 192). From this illustration, both Juliet and Romeo are ready to die for each other for the sake of love. Their affection was indeed deep. Juliet started it by faking her death so that her family could leave her alone and then her plan was to take advantage of family members’ belief that she is dead to be with Romeo. Juliet taking such an initiative shows ultimate love. It means that she had decided to spend the rest of her life without seeing her family members but be with her lover. Romeo is still the same. He indeed killed himself for learning that Juliet is dead. The action indicates that the two loves each other to the point of dying for one another.
Even though they were abandoned by their family members because they considered their love as forbidden, they fought for each other. Romeo’s family disowned him for his persistent move to be with Juliet which his family was against. There was a conflict between Juliet’s and Romeo’s family causing feuds each day. The feuds resulted in more crimes like murder and attempt to separate the two lovers. However, Romeo opted to be with Juliet no matter what. He was willing to spend his life away from his family and be with the woman she loves. He sacrifices not to be with his own blood family for the sake of the girl he truly loves.
In conclusion, the theme of love is shown throughout “Juliet & Romeo” novel. In spite of all the obstacles Romeo and Juliet stay committed to each other- they had many obstacles yet they were committed. For example, just as illustrated in the discussion, the families in both sides were against them but they could not manage to separate them which are an indication of ultimate love between them. The family was against them; even prince of Verona didn’t want them together as he didn’t want war by the two families, he wanted the bloodshed to be kept off the streets. Although Verona and Prince harassed Romeo in the target of separating him from Juliet, they did not succeed as explained in detail in the paper above. They were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice of death, they rather die than be apart, and they were abandoned by the family, friends, and society. The two died for each other eventually because they needed to stay together. Their families’ feud could not succeed in putting them apart too.
