The sequence of development is that we learn to do things in the correct order, eg, sit, crawl, stand, walk and run or wash, dry, comb your hair, clean your teeth and dress. It is doing things in the logical order and this has to be learnt so therefore we are developing our skills.
The rate of development is quite different, this is relating to how fast we are learning to do these tasks and this can depend on factors such as our physical growth, environmental factors and our support systems eg parents. So the difference between the sequence and rate of development will vary with each person and will be made up from different factors, are we physically able to do the task and do we understand how to do the task? So when the baby wants to stand up, is the leg muscle developed and strong enough and does the baby know how to be able to get up off the floor?
