This paper explores anorexia nervosa. Anorexia is another word for the disorder anorexia nervosa. Men and women from different age groups can be affected by this disorder. This type of psychological disorder is when someone has an irregular low body weight and does compulsive exercise. People with this disorder have a fear of gaining weight. Anorexia can have symptoms that are physical and mental. A physical example of this disorder would be to layer on clothing to hide the weight loss or to keep warm. Anorexia mental symptoms such as depression or wanting to isolate themselves from, everyone can be a big clue. The consequences come into play when people are struggling with this disorder such as the body, denying essential nutrients and slowing down processes in the body. Many people around the world suffer from this disorder. A lot of different topics will be further discussed and in more detail about this paper explaining the psychological disorder, anorexia nervosa.
There has been tons of research on this specific type of psychological disorder. Anorexia nervosa or just anorexia has been very common eating disorder throughout the world. This disorder does not just affect a certain type of person even though studies have shown that this disorder is more common in females. “Historian and psychologist have found evidence of people displaying symptoms of anorexia for hundreds or thousands of years” (as cited in NEDA, 2018). Anorexia affects people that are different race, sex or age. There are multiple causes, symptoms and consequences that come with this disorder. Prevention of this disorder can happen, but the patient or patients cannot do it alone.
There are two types of anorexia: restrictive and purging. Restrictive is when the person is at the point where they are starving themselves. Taking laxatives to speed up the process of digesting food or vomiting after eating is known as purging. Symptoms can be biological, cognitive, somatic, and social. Biological symptoms include the brain and the function. Research has shown that biological causes of this disorder sometimes can run in the family. If a mom or one of her daughters has struggled with anorexia than there is a high percentage that her other daughter will struggle with the same disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help an anorexia patient who is trying to gain weight. This helps the patient get back into a regular eating pattern. Somatic is another therapy. Somatic therapies purpose is to take away all of the negativity. Social impairments are a big clue when it comes to this eating disorder. Impairments come into play when a person who has anorexia denies wanting to be social. The social symptoms of this disorder are when the person disconnects from family and friend outings like birthday parties. Dressing in layers of clothing to stay warm or to hide the dramatic weight loss is one of many emotional or behavioral symptoms. A kid or adult denies being hungry when offered food, or having food patterns. Eating foods in a certain order or rearranging food around on a plate. There are many causes to why men, women, and kids go this far in harming their body. People who have depression or bipolar could suffer from anorexia. Being depressed and also have an eating disorder can lead to suicide.
Anorexia has a cause and effect situation. There are many things that cause someone to become anorexic. Some causes of anorexia can include not being happy with your body, abuse, or wanting everything in your life to be perfect even your body. There are also many effects or risks that involve becoming anorexic. The effects of being anorexic can risk harming your whole body inside and out. Anorexia does not just affect you mentally, but also physically in ways you cannot come back from. Anorexia affects your brain, hair, heart, blood, muscles/joints, kidneys, body fluids, both small and large intestines, hormones, and your skin. Each part of your body responds differently when there is not enough food to function. Studies have shown that people tend to lose your memory, become moody and sometimes even faint when the brain cannot function well. Hair becomes very thin and brittle. Having low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and coming close to heart failure is how your heart reacts to low food intake. The blood in the body becomes thin and you become endemic. The kidneys start to go into kidney failure. Having low potassium, magnesium, and low sodium are linked to body fluids. In the intestines you become constipated and feeling bloated. Hormones are going through a lot when nothing else is working correctly in your body. Men, women, and kids usually stop growing, because they are not getting enough nutrition in their body. The hormones make the menstruation slow down or even stop in women. Trying to have kids will become harder, higher risk of having a miscarriage, and a risk of having a baby with low birthrate. Women who are anorexic and pregnant will most likely have to have a C section. Bruising easily, having dry, yellow skin, and very brittle nails is when the skin starts to be affected by the lack of nutrients being put in your body.
