IntroductionAs for a student who taken Business Communication (GT00503) this semester, we have been assigning to do an assignment entitled tourist interview. An interview is a formal meeting that is conducted face to face which consists more than one person at the same time. Based on the interview sessions, we will explain the five matters that we focus on during the interview which is “Who, Why, Where, When, What and Purpose”. There are 3 person which our group manage to do interview session with. The first person is Mr. Alex, who is a tourist, the second person is Mr. Harry, who is an engineer and the last person is Ms. Liew, who works as a banker. The reason why our group decided to do an interview session with these 3 persons is because they are tourist and based on our assignment, we have been assigning to focus making an interview with person who is not locally live in Labuan. The other reason is that we found that these 3 persons is friendly, and they are willing to accept our interview invites. For the first person which we have an interview session with which is Mr. Alex, we have conducted an interview session with him at the Labuan International Airport. Meanwhile for Mr. Harry and Ms. Liew, we accidentally met them at the same place which is Palm Beach Resort which is a Hotel that is in Labuan even though Mr. Harry and Ms. Liew are not relative and has no family connection. We have conducted the interview session with the 3 persons which we have mention above on the same day (5 November 2018) but with different time. For the interview session with Mr. Alex we have conducted it in the morning of 5 November meanwhile for Mr. Harry and Ms. Liew it is during the evening of 5 November. The purpose of having an interview session with the Mr. Alex, Mr. Harry and Ms. Liew is to fulfil our group question regarding the “Tourist Interview” assignment.
Interview ReportTourist 1: Mr AlexIvy: Hello sir, we are students from University Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus. Would you like to do an interview with us for our Business Communication assignment?
Mr Alex: Yes. I would like to. Seems I’m quite free right now.
Ivy: Why do you choose Labuan as your vacation destination?
Mr Alex: Alright well, as for me Labuan have its own attraction for tourist. For like an example, their breath-taking ocean view where we can see sunset and sunrise in peace. Furthermore, for me are the foods here.
Ivy: What is your opinion about our local food? And do you have any favourite choices so far?
Mr Alex: Yes, I do. I love the taste of Nasi Katok here. The price also reasonable and Nasi Katok is the simple meal to order and fastest serve and suitable for lunch and also dinner.
Jess Nelson: Do you have explored any interesting places in Labuan so far?
Mr Alex: So far I went to the beach near the university because the local said that the beach is the best can be seen there and I totally agreed. The environment is quiet, calm and so beautiful.
Ivy: Do you have any planning where to travel for next destination?
Mr Alex: I am planning to go Philippines for my next destination.
Ivy: Do you think that communicating with the local people is hard to understand?
Mr Alex: I don’t think so. This is because anywhere at Labuan, the local people can speak English very well. Maybe because of Labuan are mostly inhabited with students around the world and business people.
Jess Nelson: What do you think about people’s interaction through social media/technology? Is it a good medium for you to get information especially about travelling details?
Mr Alex: People nowadays use Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Google to find beautiful place to visit too. One of the best channel to get fastest information with a blink of an eye, everything simply so easy right now.
Ivy: Sir, what is your opinion about business communication?
Mr Alex: Business communication is a way on how people share information within outside and inside organization. Plus, business communication is also referring on how the company share information to promote their product or services to customers.
Ivy: Do you agree if the improved business communication can benefit the next generation?
Mr Alex: Yes, of course!
Ivy: Our last question is that do you have any business experience before? If yes, can you share on how you deal with your customer?
Mr Alex: I used to be a manager for restaurant before, so yes, I’m dealing with every different types of customer day by day. As for manager, the worst moment is when your customer complained about your product and viral it on social media. So you have to be calm when facing the customer and hear what they were complaining about and stick with the motto’s restaurant that is ‘Customer is always right’. I asked apologies from the customer and change the food that he ordered with a better quality and quantity. Without customer, the restaurant would be nothing. So, you must treat your customer right even when they were wrong as the customer will always be right.
Ivy: That’s a good advice and sharing sir. Thank you for your time and we are sorry to disturb your holiday. Have a nice day ahead and safe journey.
Tourist 2: Mr HarryErica: Good afternoon sir, we are students from University Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus. Would you like to do an interview with us for our Business Communication assignment?
Mr Harry: Oh sure, why not. So, what’s the thing you want to ask?
Erica: Alright. Here’s the first question. Why do you choose Labuan as your vacation destination?
Mr Harry: Well, actually I came here for work purpose for a project at Petronas Labuan Gas Terminal.
Erica: I see, Sir. What is your opinion about our local food? And do you have any favourite choices so far?
Mr Harry: For me, to be honest the taste is so-so, but so far, my favourite here in Labuan is Nasi Penyet.
Jess Nelson: Anyway, sir. Have explore any interesting places in Labuan so far?
Mr Harry: Of course. I got the chance to visit few places like Marine Museum, Chimney and War Cemetery. Oh, and Bird Park as well.
Erica: Do you have any planning where to travel for next destination?
Mr Harry: Hmm, for now I don’t have any plan yet. However, I’m looking forward to visit Bali someday.
Erica: Do you think that communicating with the local people is hard to understand?
Mr Harry: About that, it’s pretty hard at first, but then I got used to it. I learnt a lot from them.
Jess Nelson: That’s good though. Sir, what do you think about people’s interaction through social media/technology? Is it a good medium for you to get information especially about travelling details?
Mr Harry: I think social media is a necessity in nowadays life in order to update basically anything, you know, everything develops so fast. Yeah, it helps a lot.
Jess Nelson: Sir, what is your opinion about business communication?
Mr Harry: Business communication? Well, the right way of communication might help some organization to expand their businesses, I guess (?).
Erica: Well, if that so, Sir. Do you agree if the improved business communication can benefit the next generation?
Mr Harry: Yes, I agree with that.
Erica: Last question from us, do you have any business experience before? If yes, can you share on how you deal with your customer?
Mr Harry: Sorry to say, I have not. But if I’ve had given chances, surely I would let myself invest some.
Erica: Alright, sure there will be a chance for you, sooner or later. Thank you, Sir for your time and we are sorry to disturb your holiday. Have a nice day ahead and wonderful moment here.
Tourist 3: Ms LiewZulaikha: Good day sir, we are students from University Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus. Would you like to do an interview with us for our Business Communication assignment?
Ms Liew: Oh hello guys! Of course sure can. So, what would you like to ask me?
Zulaikha: Why do you choose Labuan as your vacation destination?
Ms Liew: As for me, Labuan is where we freed from anything. More calm and relax! Plus, variety kind of chocolate and free from tax is one of the advantages.
Jess Nelson: What is your opinion about our local food? And do you have any favourite choices so far?
Ms Liew: Food? I love all kinds of food as long its food! But my priority was Kon Lou Mee Fish Soup. It would be my forever favourite here in Labuan.
Jess Nelson: Have you explore any interesting places in Labuan so far?
Ms Liew: So far since two days here, I’ve visited the popular Chimney in Labuan, Marine museum and many more! But what attracts me is the Oil & Gas industrial. I like to see how the industry works and yes I am actually interested in this field. Will try one day!
Zulaikha: Do you have any planning where to travel for next destination?
Ms Liew: Let see my budget first. Kidding! I’m looking forward to visit Penang Island.
Zulaikha: Wow! That’s another amazing place. Do you think that communicating with the local people is hard to understand?
Ms Liew: From my view, as long I could understand what are they trying to say then it’s more than enough.
Zulaikha: Alright. What do you think about people’s interaction through social media/technology? Is it a good medium for you to get information especially about travelling details?
Ms Liew: Well, I think technology is important nowadays because it’s fast and could help us so much in this globalisation era.
Jess Nelson: Miss, what is your opinion about business communication?
Ms Liew: When talk about business communication, the first thing across my mind is promoting or sharing, company could promote their product towards consumer in a professional way.
Zulaikha: Do you agree if the improved business communication can benefit the next generation?
Ms Liew: Yes, absolutely can. It would be useful for the future!
Zulaikha: One last question, do you have any business experience before? If yes, can you share on how you deal with your customer?
Ms Liew: Yes I’ve experienced it before even it’s just a small business. The important thing is that you have to always accept their complaint and take it in positive ways. Always learn on how to improve that’s all.
Zulaikha: Yes, be positive is always a good way to overcome negativity. Thank you miss for your cooperation and we are sorry to disturb you on your holiday. Have a nice day ahead and wonderful memories from your vacation
ReflectionBased on our interview sessions with those three tourists, we figured out that running this process from day 1 to the day we are finally getting tourists are a challenging and time-consuming process. Our expectations are to get two or three tourists in a day but unfortunately, we failed to get one. We still did not give up and try again the next day after we discussed on some other ways that might be more helpful for us. After then, we were so thankful that we met few tourists to be interviewed but not all of them willingly to do it as we understand that they did not want to be disturbed and some of them were rushing to go somewhere else again. We also realized that it was hard to maintain energetic after a long and sunny day around the city and to control our facial expression when some of the tourists rejected us as we try to control ourselves not to force or beg them to do the interview. We scared this might bring a bad impression to our campus and our country as well.
Despite all of this, we still managed to give commitment and support to one another although we had to sacrifice our time and pocket money. During the interview, we were having hard time to catch and understand some words and pronunciations from the tourists because they talked too fast and their English pronunciation quite different from us but yet still can be understood by the local people. We were grateful because most of us can communicate well in English language and helped each other if suddenly one of our members hesitated. The chosen tourists were very nice and helpful people, as the moment they heard that we were about to do interview for our assignment purpose, they agreed and willingly to be interviewed. As for Mr Harry and Ms Liew, we met them at Palm Beach Resort so we were having a comfortable conversation with them and we believed that this situation was a bonus for us so that they could respond well in the interview. Meanwhile, we met Mr Alex at Labuan Airport and he was waiting for his flight to Kota Kinabalu. Mr Alex also willingly to be interviewed as he will not be bored while waiting for his flight.
From the interview session, these three tourists showed us that they significantly had a different perception as they answered every question from their own opinion. As we provide simple questions that related to business communication, we received different views from them which some of them managed to give a good point and some of them did not know much about it. The tourists went to Labuan for different purposes such as for job purpose, vacation where they attracted with the Mother Nature here in Labuan and to feel the tax free benefit here in Labuan. Most of them shared the same opinion on how important technology and social media because the society had used this modernisation medium on their daily lives and perhaps will become our daily needs. Although the tourists did not have any clue about business communication, they still able to share their opinion based on their own understanding. We were so thankful because although some of their answers were not answering the question but they had shared good advices and business experience to us as we actually thought that they will respond passively.
This assignment gave us good experience and moral values especially when working together with other people. We learned to improve our pronunciation and communication skills and to use a correct grammar when communicating in English language. By conducting this assignment, our group members acknowledged that we must construct well prepared planning to avoid miscommunication and confusion when handling the assignment. Generally speaking, the more impersonal communication, the least effective and most efficient will be. Conversely, the more personal the communication, the more effective and least efficient the medium will be CITATION Tim83 l 1033 (Timm, 1983). We realized that our group needs to do a lot of improvement as we started to find tourist on the first day and faced difficult situation. We also learned how to manage our time wisely and pressure whenever facing new environment and new people as this can give us early exposure to step on the workplace.
Last but not least, for future review, we need to be better prepared and have confidence when dealing with other people and in making decision in order to reach our objective. Consultants conduct a study to determine effective and efficient ways that communication can help a business reach goals CITATION Rob18 l 1033 (Gill, 2018) . We believed that making an excellent technique and maintaining a positive vibe has made it easier for us to finish this assignment. After all, we did enjoy working together, having support from one another and creating positive relationship while we share new experience and knowledge.
ConclusionBased on the interviews conducted, our group found that the three interviewees which is Mr. Alex, Mr. Harry and Ms. Liew have choose Labuan as their vacation destination. This is because Labuan itself have its very own uniqueness towards the culture, environment, facilities and many more. In general, Labuan population comes with various types of races such as Kedayan, Kadazan Dusun, Chinese, Brunei and many more as some of them was here for working purpose and it is not a problem for the population to live here in Labuan without any racism problems which makes the tourists feel safe to be here in Labuan. As for the environment part, the interviewees are more likely to like the Labuan environment, this is because the nature of lifestyle in Labuan is less hectic than any other places. Labuan is such a good place to chill and the facilities is also provided. As for the main topic which we strive to ask regarding business communication here in Labuan. Other than that, they are mostly responded that for the language which is used when a local Labuan company try to connect to a non-local Labuan company is mostly English and they can communicate well to the new comers. They also gave us a good feedback and responses during the interview. Lastly, we are able to get an unforgettable experience in conducting this task, we manage to learn on how to talk properly with other people not only at business communication but also including proper communication.
