Waste mapping is a fairly new strategy which is being used by organizations to facilitate more effective waste management. It helps the institutions understand where and how waste occurs, and how much it is costing them. The waste mapping of a holiday resort can be fairly explained through the waste management hierarchy, said Pirani, S.I & Arafat, H.A (2014).
The waste management hierarchy shows that of all the waste generated in a resort, a very small amount is what should be disposed as they couldn’t be avoided, reused, recycled, recovered or treated.
According to Pirani S.I ; Arafat, H.A (2014), for an institution to be able to avoid some waste generation, they have to think about the products they want to use in their resort. Think whether its waste is re-useable or if it can be recycled, if it can’t then they shouldn’t buy it.
According to PA Consulting group (2001), reducing the generation of waste is the first alternative that should be taken because it supports the effective use of resources and reduces the waste material that must be disposed from the property. The waste reduction strategy works well when the avoidance stage was considered and applied.
Resorts should reuse items in their original form for the same or a different purpose rather than disposing them. If an item cannot be reused in the resort, the institution should investigate the possibility of selling it or donating it to employees, charitable organizations, schools, businesses or other interested parties.
Recycling consists of processing and transforming wastes into new, marketable products. This is the least favourable waste management option and should be considered only if the reduce and reuse options are not relevant to a particular waste category. It is also the waste management option that is most difficult to implement in areas that lack a strong industrial base.
In addition recycling, some waste can be treated to make compost; the most appropriate waste for this is the kitchen waste and garden waste. With all the waste classification, the employees in the resort need to be trained about waste management so that they can communicate it better with the resort users.
Communication and training.
The resort should hire management team with qualifications, and there must be workshops where they are trained on how to handle waste. With the rest of the resort staff, they must be informed that waste has to be separated into three categories: i) Recyclables (papers, plastics and glasses), ii) food discards and iii) Garden and plants waste. This way they will understand which waste fits in which category of the waste management hierarchy.
When the stuff understands it better, they will communicate it better with the resort users (visitors). They can have rubbish bins which are labelled (glass, plastic or papers); in the rooms they must also have bins.
