When communicating with a parent with a speech impairment it is crucial that you have patience. You should be courteous when having a conversation and never interrupt or finish their sentences for them as it is rude and will make them feel unconfident. If there was a point in the conversation where you did not understand then politely say with honesty. If there is a difficulty for the parent to communicate then you can simply request the parent to make a gesture such as a simple nod as you communicate. There are also different techniques of communicating such as written communication or sign language, you may need a translator when dealing with sign language if you do not sign yourself.
Some people may get upset, frustrated or even feel ashamed when dealing with speech impairment so always be attentive, patient caring when put into this situation.
